Literature students have just experienced a culturally enriching trip to London. First stop was The British Library to see the works of Chaucer and Shakespeare and even the homework book of Edward II. After a quick rest at the hotel it was off to the West End to watch Hadestown: it was amazing to see characters like Eurydice who we had met through the poetry of Carol Ann Duffy come to life on the stage. According to student Faith Parry, “Hadestown was the best play I have ever seen!”. However, we were not impressed with the price of the ice creams.
Day two saw us take a leisurely stroll from Blackfriars via St Paul’s Cathedral to The Globe Theatre for a guided tour. Whilst there we witnessed actors on the stage warming up and rehearsing a fight scene, great inspiration for the drama students amongst us.
That afternoon students had some free time to explore after we had lunched at Borough Market. Some of us travelled together to the Natural History Museum because dinosaurs!!! Then after another rest we travelled back to The Globe to see A Comedy of Errors. Student Kaysan Azam McArdle commented that, “I really enjoyed connecting with Shakespeare within a modern context, from the exhibition at the Globe to watching the performance live. I felt very invested in the culture of theatre and appreciated it.” Apparently, Julie enjoyed it so much she could be heard laughing from one side of the theatre to the other. And who said Shakespeare wasn’t funny?
