Yorkshire Expedition Has Students Preparing for Once in a Lifetime Trip

Each year, our students are given the incredible opportunity to participate in an overseas expedition, and in 2024, they will be heading to Vietnam. This life-changing adventure allows them to immerse themselves in a local community while contributing to essential projects, such as helping to rebuild roads that were damaged by recent heavy rains. These roads are vital for the community’s ability to transport goods and access markets, making the students’ efforts invaluable.

Beyond the road-building work, the students will take part in a variety of community-based projects that provide direct support to the local population. They will also live with local families, learning to cook traditional dishes and gaining a deep appreciation for Vietnamese culture. This cultural exchange promises to be a highlight, fostering meaningful connections as both the students and the local families share their experiences and customs with one another.

To round off the trip, students will enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime sailing experience around the stunning Halong Bay, providing them with a perfect mix of hard work, cultural learning, and adventure.

In preparation for this incredible journey, students recently embarked on a build-up expedition in Yorkshire. They camped outdoors, learned to cook on a budget, and honed their map-reading and navigation skills while exploring the picturesque countryside. This practical experience is designed to equip them with essential skills for the overseas trip, ensuring they are ready to face any challenges that come their way.

Nancy Wall, one of the staff expedition leaders, believes that the trip is truly transformative. “It’s a superb experience, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for students to develop skills they will use throughout their lives. They grow so much during their time away, creating lasting memories and friendships that stay with them forever.”
