QE Students Dive into Media Production Workshops at Sunderland and Teesside Universities

Creative Media Practice students recently visited both Teesside and Sunderland University for hands-on Media Production workshops.

At Sunderland University, the students had the exciting opportunity to take part in 4 different workshops. Students created their own online magazine article review,  which featured topics of their choice including games, restaurants and film reviews.  The group got to grips with the University’s state of the art media facilities as the Journalism workshop was followed by a TV Studio experience, where students planned, directed, filmed and presented their very own live TV show.

Tanula Conyers, first year Creative Media Practice student attended Sunderland University and said: “This was an amazing opportunity to learn about the interworking of a future learning experience. It also introduced me to the way the creative industry works behind the scenes, which was incredibly interesting.”

Afternoon sessions included a Bonkers Branding session, where students created their own poster considering the importance of typography in media products, followed by an insight into the developing opportunities within the Media Industry in the North East.

Students at both universities, gained a glimpse into life for a Media undergraduate, and had a great day.

At Teesside University, students perfected their journalism skills, as they were sent out to do their very first VOX POPS around campus. QE students experienced life as a broadcast journalist,  and interviewed people around campus on their chosen topic, before returning to the Journalism Hub to write up their articles. Students focused on worthy issues such as gaining people’s openings on the General Election, Inheritance Tax, Tuition fees and Immigration to name a few.  Our budding filmmakers  took part in Script to Screen Workshop where they planned, scripted and filmed  a short film sequence around campus.

Louis Thursby, first year student said: “It was a fun day where I met some nice new people, and improved my media skills in a useful way for when I eventually complete my personal project in second year.”

Beccy Vickers, Course Leader of Creative Media Practice commented: “‘It was a really good experience for our students to see both Sunderland and Teesside’s media facilities, and experience what life would be like on some of their degrees. The TV Studio experience  was a particular highlight for our students. They also had to work to strict deadlines with their magazine article writing, which helped them to gain an understanding of both higher education and the journalism industry.”
