Over seventy of QE’s mathematicians entered the national annual UK Mathematics Trust Senior Maths Challenge in which participants are required to solve 25 maths problems in 90 minutes. This year, nine students were awarded the highest honour of a gold certificate whilst eighteen students were awarded a silver certificate and thirty-six received a bronze certificate. Year 2 students Louis Brett, Daniel Owen, Toby Smith and Ebonie Totty, along with Year 1 students Rowan Edwards, Ben Hawes, Jess Sleath, Francis Town and Edison Xu, all scored very highly and were awarded gold certificates. About 10% of students taking part in this national competition achieve gold.
Helen Carvill, Course Leader for A Level Mathematics, said: “we are very impressed by the number of excellent mathematicians here at QE, many of whom will go on to use their mathematical and problem-solving skills at a higher level in a wide range of careers.” Ebonie missed the presentation by College Principal Laurence Job as she was attending an interview at Cambridge University where she hopes to study mathematics. Daniel is applying to take up a computer science apprenticeship whist Toby is hoping to study Natural Sciences at Durham University.
