Art and Design Department students are joining forces with Oxfam Darlington to launch an exciting sustainability project aimed at raising funds for the charity. The project will see students from Textiles, Fine Art, Graphics, and Art Foundation create bespoke pieces from second-hand garments and objects, which will then be resold to support Oxfam’s mission.
The collaboration will give students the chance to apply their creative talents to upcycling a variety of donated products. The final pieces will be showcased and sold at Darlington’s Eco Festival in June, with all proceeds benefiting Oxfam’s global and local initiatives.
Rachel Barras, Assistant Head of Art and Design], expressed her enthusiasm for the partnership: “We are excited to see what the students come up with for this project and are grateful to Rachel Parry, Store Manager at Oxfam Darlington, for inviting us to take part in this opportunity. The experience students will gain from this will be fantastic for their portfolios and progression.”
Erin Christie, a student in the Art Foundation program, shared her excitement about the project: “I’m really excited for this project and working to a different kind of brief with the charity. It gives us the opportunity to work with materials and objects that we wouldn’t usually do, and I’m looking forward to seeing all the items created.”
The collaboration is an excellent opportunity for students to engage with sustainability in a practical way, while also contributing to a worthy cause. The Eco Festival in June will be a celebration of local and sustainable creativity, and the student-made pieces will form an integral part of the event.
