Students from QE Sixth Form College were honoured at a recent Volunteering Awards ceremony, recognising their exceptional dedication to making a difference both locally and globally. The awards celebrated the wide range of projects undertaken by students this year—from raising thousands for charity to supporting foodbanks, care homes, and international aid initiatives.
The evening was filled with pride, emotion, and admiration as the audience learned about the impact these young people have had on their communities. Among the standout honours was Student Project of the Year, awarded to Project Vietnam, where students including Jack Medcalf and Kiera Langham travelled to Vietnam to work alongside a local community devastated by flooding. Living and working in basic conditions, they helped rebuild classrooms and pathways, showing resilience, compassion, and teamwork throughout.
QE Young Citizen of the Year was awarded to Tom Fenny, who showed extraordinary bravery and quick thinking when he initiated life-saving first aid for a collapsed individual in the street. His calm response in a moment of crisis was an example of responsibility and maturity beyond his years.
The Chris Wiper Award for Commitment to the Community was presented to members of the local cadets, represented by Grace Thompson. They were honoured for their role in organising Remembrance Day and VE Day events, bringing the community together to reflect and remember those who served. Their award was presented by the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of the County, in a moving moment that highlighted their powerful contribution to civic life.
Ruben Putt received the Contribution to College Community Award, recognising his consistent dedication to supporting events that bring people together. Ruben played a key role in organising a festive Christmas lunch and carol service at the College, welcoming over 80 local guests and spreading joy during the holiday season. Reflecting on his award, Ruben said: “It’s great to receive an award, but to be honest, I just love doing things that help others.”
The QE Interact Club, a student-led volunteering group, was also recognised for another incredible year, having raised over £6,000 for good causes. From creative fundraising to hands-on community action, their impact continues to grow.
Music for the evening was beautifully performed by student Marley Allen, whose piano playing added a special warmth and elegance to the celebrations. Nancy Wall, QE’s Volunteering Coordinator, praised all the award winners: “It’s incredibly inspiring to see young people leading with compassion, initiative, and purpose. Their selfless work is a credit to QE and to the community at large.”
The QE Volunteering Awards were a proud reminder of what young people can achieve when driven by kindness, courage and a desire to serve. The College celebrates each and every one of them.
