It was a red carpet moment to remember for talented Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College (QE), Darlington student Michael Smith, who has been recognised as an emerging talent in the UK film industry, receiving the prestigious ‘One to Watch’ award at this year’s Into Film Awards ceremony in London’s iconic Leicester Square. The award, which celebrates outstanding young talent in the UK film industry, placed Michael alongside leading figures such as Hugh Grant, Geri Halliwell, James Norton, Edith Bowman, and Rose Ayling-Ellis.
A former student of St John’s Catholic Academy, Bishop Auckland, Michael Smith, achieved an A in A Level Photography, a Distinction in Creative Media Studies and a B in Film Studies, and is progressing to study Film Production at Sunderland University. He has been passionate about filmmaking from an early age; beginning his journey at just eight years old, he directed his first feature-length documentary, Streets of Steel: The History of Witton Park, at the age of sixteen. The documentary premiered at Witton Park Village Hall in January 2024 and highlights an important yet often overlooked chapter of northern heritage, earning widespread appreciation from the local community.
In recognition of his skill and dedication, Michael has recently been commissioned by Teescraft Engineering and Durham County Council to produce a documentary commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 2025. He also volunteers his time at prominent local cultural events such as Kynren and the Hardwick Live Festival, further underscoring his commitment to community engagement through film.
Alongside his academic and creative pursuits, Michael has volunteered as a videographer for Bishop Auckland Football Club for the past five years. His determination was exemplified during his coverage of the Queen’s funeral and King Charles’ coronation, where he rose early to secure a prime filming position—supported by a fold-out chair and his father’s shoulders—to capture memorable moments marked by raw emotion and excitement. This dedication was recognised at QE’s recent Volunteering Awards Evening, where Michael received an award for his valuable contributions.
Reflecting on his experience at QE, Michael said: “My time at QE has been nothing short of excellent. Every one of my teachers has been incredibly supportive in helping me pursue a career in film. Going from the North East to London was a huge privilege, and receiving the award was beyond anything I ever expected.”
