QE Alumni Shines at Tees Valley International Film Festival

Earlier this month, QE’s Media and Film teachers had the privilege of supporting former student Michael Smith at the premiere of his brand-new documentary-drama, The First Five Miles, at the Tees Valley International Film Festival.

The film, starring British acting legend Stephen Tompkinson, was written and directed by Michael, who only completed his A Levels this year! His work wowed audiences, showcasing incredible attention to detail and creative vision. At just 18 years old, Michael has made his mark as an exciting new talent in the filmmaking industry.

QE Creative Media Practice teacher Beccy Vickers attended the event and shared her thoughts:

“The film was outstanding and Michael’s attention to detail is phenomenal. He’s definitely one to watch, at just 18 years old, he is a fabulously talented young man with a bright future in film making ahead!”

The screening was followed by an insightful Q&A featuring Michael, Stephen Tompkinson, and Chris Lloyd, local historian and chief feature writer at The Northern Echo.

Michael is now studying Film and Media at the University of Sunderland, continuing to pursue his passion for storytelling. Humble, driven, and full of raw talent, he’s a name to watch in the world of film.
