Journalism Insight from Successful Alumni

Students were given a unique insight into the world of journalism, thanks to an exclusive masterclass delivered by former QE Student Tom Johnston, Production Journalist for ITV Tyne Tees.

Tom, who studied English Language, Media and Politics at QE, returned to the College on the 17th of February to give the aspiring journalists of QE an exclusive masterclass of what working in the journalism industry would look like.

The two-hour workshop offered a fascinating insight into Tom’s career, and provided a realistic snapshot of the fast-paced journalism profession, with students thrown straight into the action writing their own story.

Out student Hollie Brown, who was at the event, reported on the workshop.

She said: “He explained the job roles available in the news industry, from reporting and editing, to production and camera operating.

“The group then looked deeper into the process of a news story and how it could evolve, specifically the Sycamore Gap scandal.

“Tom then began to explain to us how he got into the industry, going to Northumbria University to study journalism, before getting a job in radio.

“His first big event which he reported on was the Winter Olympics 2018 in Korea, then he progressed onto work as an ITV producer.

“Tom explained how we can ask about sensitive topics and to write about it in a way that doesn’t insult or hurt the individual.

“We then took part in an exercise which involved practising writing a 15 second interval for the news about a police report, specifically about a car crash involving a young girl.

“We all really enjoyed Tom’s visit – it was eye-opening for us all and gave us the reality of what working in the journalism industry would involve.”

Creative Media Practice course leader, Beccy Vickers added: “This was an invaluable experience for our students interested in the journalism and live news industry. Tom’s insight and passion for his work really encouraged the students to feel inspired and determined to succeed.”
