Future Medics Gain Hands-On Experience

From stitching wounds, to surgery simulations, QE students experienced medicine in action at a two day event at James Cook University Hospital.

The event combined networking opportunities with a wide range of hands-on clinical activities, giving students valuable insight into working within a hospital environment.

On the first day, students met healthcare professionals from a variety of disciplines, learned about their career journeys, and gained advice on pathways into medicine. Day two saw students take part in practical workshops, including suturing, tracheostomy procedures, orthopaedics, dentistry, emergency medicine and appendectomy techniques.

For many QE students, the experience helped confirm their future ambitions. Cole, who hopes to become a cardiothoracic surgeon, said:

” This experience provided the exact clinical experience I felt I needed to prove surgery was the exact career path I wanted to pursue.”

” The opportunity solidified for me that medicine is exactly the career I desire; the ability to save and prolong human lives is so inspiring to me.”

Martha described the suturing workshop as a highlight of the event.

“The precision required to effectively suture made me appreciate how hard doctors truly work.”

Throughout the two days, students were able to ask questions directly to doctors, surgeons, and medical students, gaining a deeper understanding of medical school, specialist careers, and the realities of working in healthcare.

Reflecting on the experience, Cole said:

“The ability to ask questions to such a wide range of doctors and medical students widened my scope as to what medical school and a career as a surgeon will be like, and it certainly created excitement for the future.”

Students also came away with a greater appreciation of the teamwork involved in delivering patient care, with Cole mentioning:

“The importance of all staff members in ensuring the smooth flow of healthcare reminded me of the importance of unity and community.”

The experience provided valuable preparation for students considering careers in medicine, helping Year 13 applicants build confidence ahead of university interviews and giving all participants a realistic insight into the challenges and rewards of working in a hospital setting.

QE is committed to providing aspiring healthcare professionals with opportunities to engage with medical schools, healthcare providers, current students and alumni, helping them make informed decisions about their future careers.
