Students were given a unique and intense insight into the world of journalism, thanks to an exclusive masterclass delivered by Gavin Foster, Editor of The Northern Echo.
The three-hour workshop offered a realistic snapshot of the fast-paced journalism industry, with students thrown straight into the action. Gavin challenged participants to craft compelling headlines and article intros based on a developing live story — simulating the pressure and quick thinking required in a real newsroom.
One of the highlights of the session was a live press conference, where students had the chance to ask vital questions on a breaking news story. The pressure mounted with a strict 20-minute deadline to write a complete article, pushing their skills to the limit.
“This was an invaluable experience for our aspiring journalists,” said Beccy Vickers, Course Leader of Creative Media Practice. “Gavin’s masterclass gave them a genuine taste of the demands and excitement of the profession.”
The session left students inspired and energised, and the department extends heartfelt thanks to Gavin Foster for sharing his time, expertise, and wisdom.
