Chemistry Alumni Become Trainee Scientists

Just a couple of years ago, former QE students Alex Smith and Jenny Turnbull studied A level chemistry with us. It was a pleasure to meet them both again this week when they spent a morning sharing their experience as trainee scientists with Johnson Matthey with our current chemistry classes.

Who are Johnson Matthey?

Jenny explained ‘We are a global leader in sustainable technologies. For over 200 years JM have used advanced metals chemistry to tackle the world’s biggest challenges.  Many of the world’s leading energy, chemicals and automotive companies depend on our technology and expertise to decarbonise, reduce harmful emissions and improve their sustainability.’

Alex commented ‘Joining JM as a Trainee Scientist has enabled us to get experience in lots of different technical areas and it’s great being hands on with our processes.  Having the opportunity to work and study gives apprentices like us a fantastic head start on their career path and no student debt’

Janet Main, Chemistry teacher at QE, says ‘As a teacher there is be no better reward than seeing your student’s shine.  Jenny and Alex are clearly happy and confident working in roles they love, and for a company that is helping them to push out of their comfort zones to realise their full potential’.
