Creative students hitting the right notes

Our creative students are taking part in an exciting project where they are working alongside renowned musicians to create a brand-new piece of music which will be performed in front of a live audience next month.

Around a dozen talented students who are part of the College’s Orchestra are receiving intensive guidance from members of the Royal Northern Sinfonia, as well as highly-regarded conductor, pianist and composer Yshani Perinpanayagam.

Yshani has received international recognition for her bold, imaginative and diverse projects, and is well-known for the breadth of her artistry across genres and disciplines.

Alongside members of the Royal Northern Sinfonia, Yshani spent the day at Queen Elizabeth College leading students on a creative musical journey to create a stunning piece of new music.

Over the coming weeks they will continue to work together, alongside students from Carmel College, before performing the new music in front of a live audience when they open an event at Darlington Hippodrome on Thursday 5 March.

The students’ performance takes place from 7:30pm and proceeds a performance by the Royal Northern Sinfonia – Prokofiev and Mendelssohn.  Tickets can be bought on the Darlington Hippodrome website and there is a discount on tickets for those aged 30 and under.

Steve McGarvie, Music Support at QE leads the College’s Orchestra, as well as the Big Band, Function Band and Pop Choir.

He said: “This is a fantastic experience for our students and something which they are extremely enthusiastic about.

“The sessions with Yshani and the Royal Northern Sinfonia have been incredibly creative and inspiring and it has really bought the best out of our orchestra members. Everybody is excited about this project and we are looking forward to seeing the students perform their piece next month.”

The orchestra at QE is one of many enrichment opportunities that students can take part in outside of their studies. From football to dance, history, chess and foreign languages, the range of over 60 enrichments activities has something for everybody.
