As part of an enriching educational experience, we offer a comprehensive Deaf Awareness course, one of 65 diverse enrichment opportunities available to students. This unique course focuses on fostering understanding and effective communication with the deaf community, equipping students with essential skills to interact in a more inclusive and empathetic way.
The Deaf Awareness course is designed to cover a range of topics, from learning the basics of British Sign Language to understanding the challenges faced by individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. The course starts with finger-spelling the alphabet and gradually progresses to holding simple conversations using sign language. It aims to give students not only practical communication tools but also a deeper appreciation for the daily experiences of those in the deaf community.
Nancy Wall, the Student Union Coordinator, expressed her enthusiasm for the course, noting the positive impact it has had on students. “It’s great to see students fully engage with this course. They get so much out of it—not just learning a new language but understanding the importance of inclusion. It broadens their perspective on communication and empathy.”
Taught by passionate and skilled instructors, the course also emphasises the importance of inclusivity in everyday life. The practical skills gained, such as learning to sign and becoming aware of communication barriers, equip students to make a real difference in various settings, from social situations to future careers.
With over 65 enrichment courses available, the Deaf Awareness course stands out for its focus on building bridges between hearing and deaf communities, fostering mutual understanding, and preparing students to create more inclusive environments.
