A heroic QE student has showcased his bravery to a national audience after being reunited with the man whose life he helped to save.
Second year student Sam Ellis made an emotional appearance on BBC breakfast recently where, for the first time, he met Nigel – who spoke about how grateful he was for Sam’s life-saving actions.
It was earlier this year when Sam was travelling back from the Peak District and came across cyclist Nigel lying unconscious in the middle of the road.
Using first aid training he had received through Cadets, Sam played a key role in helping to save Nigel’s life. Putting Nigel in the recovery position, Sam then carried out life-saving CPR until the emergency services arrived.
The pair were recently reunited on BBC breakfast where they were interviewed by Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty.
“You saved my life – you know that don’t you”, were the first words that Nigel said upon meeting Sam.
“I think it is staggering what you have done – I’m really emotional,” he added.
Looking back on the incident while being interviewed, Sam said: “It is a very surreal experience because the last time I was with you it was not under the best circumstances – you were practically dead and now I am with you and you seem really well – it feels very strange.”
Sam, who is a Sergeant in the Northallerton Air Cadets and part of the QE Combined Cadet Force, also received QE’s Young Citizen Award at the College’s Volunteering Awards for his life-saving endeavours.
Studying Maths, Physics and IT in his second year at QE, Sam hopes to pursue a career in the emergency services in the future.
