Recently, QE student, Peter Crossen, supported the Czech team, Inland Roots Ocean Soul, in the prestigious Transat Café L’Or transatlantic yacht race.
Peter played a key role in preparing for an epic 17-day transatlantic race. From readying the vessel and coordinating with sponsors to attending safety briefings and assisting with technical inspections, his efforts helped the team start strong when they set sail on the 26th.
Partway through the journey, the team faced a major setback after striking an object at sea, damaging a rudder. Thanks to quick repairs during a stopover in A Coruña, they are now back on course and ready to continue racing.
Peter is a first year QE student currently studying Computer Science, Economics and Mathematics.
Reflecting on the experience, Peter told QE:
“It was an incredible time! The atmosphere in the race village is electric, and it was such a privilege to be part of the Inland Roots Ocean Soul team.”
“There’s so much that goes into getting ready for the start of such a long transatlantic race, from preparing all the food and drink for up to 17 days at sea, to meetings with sponsors, zoom meetings about emergency procedures, and 3 hour long boat inspections. It felt really rewarding to contribute and ensure the team had a strong start when they set off on the 26th. Representing QE and the Czech Republic made it all the more meaningful.”
QE is proud of Peter for showing initiative and embracing international collaboration in such a challenging and inspiring environment.
