Journalism Star: Amani Hussain Wins National Young Reporter Award

We’re delighted to announce that first year student, Amani Hussain, has been named as one of the winners of the Young Reporter Scheme 2025.

The scheme – one of the many enrichment opportunities offered here at college – is a national programme offered in partnership with the Newsquest Media Group, providing students the chance to write for a real live online newspaper.

From culture reviews to political writing, Amani tackled the whole range of journalistic writing styles with real flare, earning herself one of the top spots in this year’s competition.

Speaking about her experience Amani explained that: “The Young Reporters Scheme was an amazing opportunity to experience hands-on journalism writing for a public news outlet and being responsible for going out to find your own stories within your own community. It massively helped me develop my own style of writing and timekeeping skills when you’re working with real deadlines. Having some of my work properly published in a newspaper already will definitely make any of my future applications stand out and it’s a ready-made portfolio of my work!”

Amani’s articles – alongside other participants – can be found on the Darlington and Stockton Times website: https://www.darlingtonandstocktontimes.co.uk/young-reporter/
