The aim of the World Around Us competition is to encourage young people to engage with natural history. This year saw participation in the competition with 66 entries from 34 students!
A hard judging session by the Darlington and Teesdale Naturalists’ Field Club (DTNFC) narrowed down the 66 entries to a shortlist of 5, based not just on the image but on the whole entry. They reviewed the shortlist with Assistant Principal Meirion Baker, to create the top three prize winners, but also thought that the other two students shortlisted should be classed as Highly Commended. Deyla Abaya and Sia Makwana should be proud of their achievement in making the shortlist.
Carole, President of the Club, presented the top three winner with their prizes. Third place went to Harry Wilkins with the dramatic image of Brimham Rocks with an excellent write up.
Second place went to Bethany Lloyd with the entry on Marram Grass. Martin Chisholm, Treasurer of DTNFC said of this entry ‘this to us was an excellent entry and to a great extent characterised the spirit of the competition, and was a wonderful photograph of this subject showing all its elements, habitat, how and why it does its job’.
First place was won by Elesha Langford for the wonderful image of not only Wastwater, but including the lake and the surrounding geology which were aptly the focus of the write up.
Well done to all of the winners, as well as everyone else who took part!
