A Level Maths and Further Maths students from QE have welcomed Michael Gibson from the Advanced Maths Support Programme to conduct a fascinating problem solving workshop. The session encouraged students to develop their mathematical problem solving and abstract reasoning skills.
The purpose of the session was to help students prepare for maths based entrance tests and interviews for competitive university courses, as well as develop skills to help them achieve high grades in their A Level exams. Michael spoke of the visit: “I really enjoyed meeting students and was very impressed by their mathematical and problem solving skills!”
Maths teacher Laurie March stated it was “great to see so many students involved and interested in Maths. Everyone present embraced the group aspect of the session which is an important skill in itself”. Steve Green, who also teaches maths adds “I was impressed by the problem solving skills our students already have and the enthusiasm they showed for harder problems”.
Students also found the experience to be rewarding, with one explaining “It was useful to find out the differences between all of the different university entrance tests”, and another student confirming “I’m going to put myself forward now I know what the tests are about”.
