QE student powers to international success

A QE student is going from strength to strength after clinching gold and silver medals in recent international competitions.

Daniel Wright, 17, represents England at Kettlebell Lifting – a competitive strength sport that involves lifting kettlebells for maximum repetitions within a set timeframe.

The first year QE student, who previously attended Longfield School, won two Gold Medals and one Silver Medal at the recent European Championships held in York.

This followed on from a Gold Medal at the World Championships in Poland in October.

And success is made all the sweeter for Daniel as he competes alongside his dad Darren, who also represents England in Kettlebell Lifting.

Daniel, who is currently studying Maths, Applied Science and Geology at QE, was introduced to Kettlebell Lifting at his local gym and competes in the 24kg category.

The sport is very popular among gym-goers and focusses on endurance, strength and technique.

“It is really good for your health and helps with other areas of fitness,” explained Daniel.

“The World Championships is the highest level you can compete at and it was a really proud moment for me to represent England. It is nice to be able to compete alongside my dad – he does a lot more running than me but it is something we can enjoy together.”

Daniel has now got his sights set on the next World Championships in Latvia in November and is working towards qualification.

In terms of his career, he hopes to be able to secure a degree apprenticeship in environmental sustainability after finishing at QE.

Daniel added: “It would be fantastic to qualify for the World Championships again – that is my aim at the moment – as well as doing well at College.

“I have really enjoyed my first year at QE – I have met some really good people and the staff are incredibly supportive.”
