A group of our Politics students visited the capital of the United States, Washington DC, this month, to find out how the knowledge they have learned in the classroom applies to the real political world in the US. Students participated in a wide range of unique opportunities, soaking in the architecturally impressive city through its many sites, from inside the heart of Congress itself, to the White House, and the Martin Luther King Memorial.
Chances to meet people working in politics in the capital and across the nation were eagerly accepted, meeting Advocates for Youth and Common Cause, two non-profit organisations campaigning around access to reproductive rights and improving the democratic system respectively, whom students thoroughly impressed with their insightful and thought provoking questions. Visits to museums like the Holocaust Memorial Museum and the National African American History Museum allowed students the opportunity to reflect and learn from the past, in order to ensure a better future.
However, it was not all work. Students were also given the opportunity to unwind and relax, visiting Kramer’s book store in Dupont Circle, dining at Zorba’s Greek restaurant, and going to see the NBA’s Washington Wizards in action, where thoroughly positive reactions were received all around.
“I have fully enjoyed every second I spent on the trip, and it is an experience that I will never forget,” said student Evie Wallis, echoing the sentiments of every student who participated. The students would also like to thank the college, and particularly Tony, Janet and Emma, for accompanying them on a fantastic opportunity and journey.
