Students Inspired by Renowned Journalist Julia Breen’s Insights on Breaking into the World of Journalism

Budding journalists from our QE student magazine, Reign, attended a talk yesterday delivered by Julia Breen from Sunderland University.

Julia is an esteemed journalist and broadcaster who has worked as an on-screen correspondent for ITV News and Chief Reporter at the Northern Echo. She hosted a news conference with the students to discuss article ideas for the upcoming edition of Reign and gave invaluable insights into how best to investigate stories and write engaging copy. Julia was blown away by the fascinating ideas generated collaboratively by the students and was so impressed by what they had produced for issue one of Reign.

Jodie Freeman, Media Studies Course Leader commented: “Julia’s talk provided a fantastic opportunity for students to hear from an established and respected journalist about how to get into the industry. She also provided an invaluable insight into investigative journalistic techniques, which the students are really looking forward to putting into practise!”

First year student Amani Hussain added that “Julia was extremely knowledgeable in all fields of journalism and she had amazing ideas as we collaborated on future articles for Reign. She also shared her experience working in the field and inspired us to not be discouraged when trying to break into the world of Journalism. Her enthusiasm about Reign was so motivating. It felt like a glimpse into my future career!”

Students are excited to apply what they have learned to their writing and are more motivated than ever to showcase their writing talents. Look out for issue 2 of Reign which will be hitting the stands in February!
