QE students recently put their scientific knowledge, teamwork, and problem-solving skills to the test in the Schools’ Analyst Competition.
Organised by Northumbria University in partnership with the Royal Society of Chemistry, the annual competition challenged students to step into the role of analytical chemists assisting a police investigation into a mysterious illness.
Using forensic, cosmetic, and analytical science techniques, students worked against the clock to analyse evidence and determine whether foul play may have been involved.
Throughout the challenge, students carried out a range of laboratory techniques, including gravimetric analysis, titrations, and thin-layer chromatography. They investigated clues surrounding the case, from analysing caffeine levels in coffee sachets, to matching lipstick samples and identifying unknown substances.
With limited time to complete the investigation, they had to work efficiently, combining their scientific knowledge with effective teamwork and communication.
Lilia, who took part in the event, said: “My favourite part of the competition was the problem-solving aspect, especially since the competition had a murder mystery context to it – it was really fun to identify different compounds.”
Reflecting on the skills developed during the event, she added: “I gained valuable insights into teamwork, especially since the competition was time limited, therefore we had to be efficient and divide tasks effectively.”
QE students impressed throughout the challenge, demonstrating outstanding scientific knowledge, analytical thinking, and teamwork. Special congratulations go to Hugo, Max and Joe, whose team were crowned this year’s competition winners.
Experiences such as the Schools’ Analyst Competition help students develop practical laboratory skills while showcasing the real-world applications of chemistry, from forensic investigations to pharmaceutical research.
